Biography:

Laura Baxter, Mezzosoprano

Laura Baxter was born in the USA and received her Bachelor of Arts in Music at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. She earned her Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance and Vocal Pedagogy at The Ohio State University School of Music where she also worked on her Master of Arts in Musicology. In New York City Ms. Baxter had the privilege to work with many great artists including Mignon Dunn, Regina Resnik and Marilyn Horne. In addition she received vocal training and coaching from masters such as Mac Morgan, Chloe Owens, William Stone, Hanna Fahlbusch, Joan Dornemann, Dalton Baldwin, Pierre Vallet and Nico Castel.

As a young singer Laura Baxter successfully participated in many competitions receiving at age 21 the first Louis Sudler Award for the Arts given at Emory University. She continued to develop her skills not only as a singer, but also as a teacher and stage director. Radio and television broadcasts also bore witness to the talent of this young singer. Some of the many roles which Ms. Baxter had the honor to perform were Dorabella in Cosi fan tutte, Hänsel in Hänsel und Gretel, Frau Reich in Lustige Weiber von Windsor, Suzuki in Madama Butterfly, Charlotte in Werther, Marcellina und Cherubino in La nozze di Figaro, and Orlovsky in Die Fledermaus.

In addition to opera, Ms. Baxter is an accomplished concert and recital singer. Her program „The Art of Song" with William Powell, pianist, was recorded and broadcast nationwide by National Public Radio. In Germany Ms. Baxter regularly sings concerts and oratorios, including works by Bach, Beethoven, Bruckner, Copland, Handel, Mahler, Mozart, Rossini, Vaughan-Williams, und Vivaldi, and she is very interested in performing modern repertoire and finding new ideas and interpretations of classical works.

On the wide screen Ms. Baxter debuted as the singing voice of Serena Joy (played by Faye Dunaway) in the feature film The Handmaid's Tale.
In addition to her performance career, Laura Baxter was on the vocal faculty at the renown Duke University and has been on the faculty at the Friedrich-Alexander-University in Erlangen-Nuremberg since 1999. She also gives seminars in non-verbal communication and presentation.
